Breeding is a hard job with a lot of risks and often not a great deal of reward. Several months ago, we let our friend Jim, of City Cat Cattery, use Deuce with his lovely Israeli import girl, Hermione. Hermione is a gorgeous girl, with an amazing head, wide earset, and beautiful refinement to go with an over the top sweet temperament. Hermione gave birth to five gorgeous kittens about 12 hours before Nightfall did, and everything went well for some time. Unfortunately, Hermione began having nutritional and hydration issues and her milk ran out. Jim wasn't in a good position to take care of kittens without the help of a mother cat, so we offered to take them in.
These kittens have lived at our house since three and a half weeks old and will grow up as Practicalcats kittens, with all the health and socialization and fun pictures as expected. The only difference will be that they'll be registered with a Citycat name. The kittens are extremely precocious and have immediately been adopted by Parfait, besides having acquired human slaves to cater to their every need, so will have no lingering impact from their mom's inability to continue nursing them. They also will have a larger assortment of foster moms and uncles to take on socialization duties.
Because they were born between our A and B litters, they've gotten Ab names. And what an amazing litter of kittens! These guys are social, demanding, full of purrs and playfulness and love nothing more than to interact with people. Every single one of them is completely in love with people and they also play amazingly well with other cats. Most of these kittens are probably silver, but we'll determine that as they get a bit older.
This litter has a Coefficient of Inbreeding of 0.390% over 10 generations. COI is important to determine the likelihood of the more frequent surfacing of disease genes and of the syndrome called "inbreeding depression" which produces weaker individuals. A COI of 1% or lower is generally considered ideal.
This litter is PRA N/N. Progressive Retinal Atrophy is a disease that causes early age blindness in cats. Cats can be negative (N/N), carriers (N/rdAc), or affected (rdAc/rdAc). Practicalcats will never breed a litter that could have affected kittens in it.
